Dr. Satish Totey


Dr. Satish Totey is among a select number of researchers who pioneered the isolation and characterizaticn of pluripotent stem cells from human embryo, which provided an important framework for the development of human embryonic stem cell lines. He also developed technology for up scaling of mesenchymal stem cells and is currently conducting phase-I clinical trials for myocardial infarction, leg ischemia, spinal cord injury and optic nerve injury at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. He has 89 research papers and 8 US patents to his credit.

The Manipal Institute of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (MISCRM), Created in 2004 is focused on developing cell based therapeutics using human embryonic stem cells or human adult stem cells.

MISCRM is a multi-institutional center composed of investigators from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Deemed University), Manipal Hospital, Bangalore and Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

The Institute is committed to deliver effective and affordable therapies in a “Bench to Bedside” approach, nurturing cutting edge science in clinical applications for “Regenerating Hope”.
Therefore, research at this Institute is directed towards acquiring the basic knowledge and understanding of stem cells and its differentiation process required for the development of therapies to treat human diseases.

Stem cell therapy can be defined as a part of a group of new techniques, or technologies that rely on replacing diseased or dysfunctional cells with healthy, functioning ones. These new techniques are being applied experimentally to a wide range of human disorders, including many types of cancer, neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, and diabetes.

Backed by some of the most accomplished stem cell research leaders, The Center is providing a comprehensive and coordinated "bench to bedside" approach to cell therapy, including basic and clinical research programs, and the development and administration of new therapies to patients. Leveraging its investigators' exceptional track records in stem cell, "first in the nation" stem cell clinical trials, the Center is promoting cutting-edge research which is translating into clinical applications. The Center is building on existing excellence at the affiliated institutions in heart disease, bone marrow transplantation, Vascular Disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Spinal cord injury.

Stem Cell Research Center has new cGMP compliance Clinical Cell Processing Facility.
The center has recently initiated four stem cell-related clinical trials.

We are the only laboratory in India audited and approved as a center for conducting research and clinical trials by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a regulatory body of India.

Objectives :
Encourage basic research aimed at generating new insights into fundamental stem cell biology and developmental processes. Foster more applied research leading to the development of human therapies for major diseases and disabilities. Explore issues of public concerns, regulation and innovation. Provide exciting training and career development opportunities.

Clinical trials :
Stem cell therapy for the treatment of damaged myocardium: safety and efficacy study. Stem cell therapy for the treatment of Spinal cord injury: safety and efficacy study. Therapeutic Angiogenesis for Patients with Limb Ischemia by Autologous Transplantation of Bone Marrow Stem Cells.: safety and efficacy study.

Studentship :
As part of our commitment to encourage young people to take up and continue a career in Stem Cell Research, MISCRM will consider applications for PhD studentships. MISCRM will consider applications from any area of basic, translational and pre-clinical or Clinical research on Stem Cell.
